Game recap: Blues vs Coyotes (Game 1)

On Tuesday, February 2nd, in front of a max of 1,400 fans, the Blues faced off against the Coyotes for game one of a two-game set. The Blues won the game 4-3 and improved to 7-2-1 on the season (15 points). They are tied for first in their division and tied for third in the overall NHL standings.

At the start of the game, the first period woes continued. According to Lou Korac, the Blues bench was "pretty animated..." during a T.V. timeout. However, the scoring was tied in the first period 1-1, after a tip-in by Christian Dvorak and a beautiful wrist shot by Mike Hoffman. The Blues outshot the Coyotes 12-11 to end the first, and they picked it up towards the end of the period.

To no surprise, the Blues kept the momentum going in the second period. Justin Faulk scored his third goal of the year after a beautiful deke and shot that went in after a late reaction from Coyotes goalie Darcy Kuemper. Christian Dvorak scored his second to tie the game 2:31 after Faulk's goal. To close out the scoring in the second period Vince Dunn made it 3-2. The Blues again outshot the Coyotes 14-7 at the end of the second.

The final period wasn't bad for the Blues. Ryan O'Reilly scored the Blues lone third-period goal 1:44 into the period. That would end up being the game-winning goal for the Blues. Nick Schmaltz scored with 2:39 to go in the game, making things interesting. Despite having a lot of offensive zone pressure at the end of the game, the Coyotes could not pull off the comeback. The Coyotes would end up outshooting the Blues 15-6 in the third and ultimately outshooting them 33-32 in the game.

Jordan Binnington achieved his 60th career win and improved to 6-1-1 on the season. Jordan Kyrou also continues his hot-streak with two assists against the Coyotes.

The Blues next game is Thursday, February 4th, at 7:00 PM CST vs. Arizona.
